Stayed at  Buddy Lodge - Bangkok, Thailand.
Please note that Khao San bars/discos close at 1.30 AM by government order (info current as of 8/05). Also, Khao San is closed to vehicular traffic at night (can be a problem if you carry lots of baggage from your taxi).

Gullivers bar is in the same Soi and has the best and most comprehensive sports coverage in Bangkok! The MRT station is about 300m easy walk.

We only had 3 days in Bangkok, so we visited the Grand Palace, etc...on day 1. We also went to the traditional Thai dinner show at the Oriental which was fun, though a bit expensive. We went to Thai boxing which was a lot of fun and we'd recommend that highly to anyone going to Bangkok.

The good discos are to be found not only in Bangkok inner city. The outlying districts have quite good discos too. Try Night Speed in Bang Bon. Spey Royal whiskey at only 350Thb. When you're half wasted, why bother about the taste?

Generally, taxis are convenient and not expensive. But MUST ask to go by meter only. As for river ferries, use the public ones that work like buses and cost only 10B and have an interval of about 10min. Compare that to a private river taxi operator who offered 400B for two persons to the same destination! Had a lot of fun bargaining at the markets, only to realise that some MBK shops offer lower prices to start with. For example, an imitation bag starts at 1250 and was bargained to 200 with great satisfaction, then MBK shop sells it at 199! Also, street food is 20B and drinks are 10B usually. MBK restaurants are a mere 10-20B more and you get cleaner food in bigger variety and portions, plus cooler environment. No wonder most of the locals eat at the malls! Cinema tix cost 100B normal but we went for the Gold Class ones that cost 500B each and provided free drinks, blankets, pillow and socks! Remember to grab an official map free at the airport cos it's the best map you'll find. Information kiosks in the city streets also offer free tranlation booklets. Pick one up for fun.

The city of Bangkok is an exciting place with lots of things to do and see. The royal palace where most tourist decides to go first is so so…So are the major tourist shopping areas such as Patpong or Silom. If shopping was in your mind I would try the areas where the Bayoke Suites are located. I heard this from a Thai colleague of mine at work that this is the place where most shops in Patpong and Silom get their products. As far as night-life goes, check out clubs in R.C.A road. You would be surprised at how clean and nice the clubs are. It is supposed to be the top notch as far as price goes but still it is very inexpensive compared to western standards. The Hollywood Award Club nearby was amazing as well as you can get lots of live rock music. This was my fifth time in Bangkok and as always I had a wonderful time. The only thing that troubles me every time I come to Bangkok is the people who try to rip off tourists, especially cab drivers, and the polluted air. But if you want everything to go your way, why not just stay at home, right?

Excellent location on Soi 5 and walking distance to Soi 4 and the Nana attractions/skytrain etc. Always walk to the end of the road for taxis, tuk-tuk and motorcycles. Those close to the hotel will fleece you and refuse to use a meter. Drop by Starbucks, round the corner on Soi 5. Very friendly service and adjoining bookshop well stocked with English reads. O'Briens just up from Starbucks does a good all day breakfast economically. Night time, Nana Plaza always first choice.

Gullivers tavern on Sukhumvit Soi 5 in Bangkok is a great place to go for a drink or to have lunch.

C Hughes 22 January 2005
Stayed at  Nai Lert Park Bangkok, Raffles International Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
A great new bar is in the State Building, just down the road from Patpong. The nearest skytrain station is Chong Nonsi. Like the Vertigo bar at the Banyan Tree, it's on a roof overlooking Bangkok. This bar is fairly small and has a sofa running all the way around the edge, so you can relax on the cushions 60 storeys above the city. A very romantic place for a nightcap.

M Kendler 05 December 2004
Stayed at  Montien Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
The Mango Tree Restaurant on the soi across from the Ramada Hotel was very good, and included live music and dancing.
